Tahitian pearls are cultivated in bivalve mollusk Pinctada margaritifera cumingi. One of the many characteristics that distinguishes one variety of oyster from another, is the color of the inner surface of the shell. The inner surface of the shell is black, as well as the edge of the mantle tissue.
Carnauba oyster (black-lipped) in the wild can live up to 30 years to reach a diameter of 30 cm and weigh about 5 kg.
French territory of the South Pacific is a major center of cultivation of black pearls. Five archipelagos make up the French Polynesia.
The size of Tahitian pearls 8 - 20 mm Pearl diameter 11 - 13 mm is an average dimension range. 15 mm samples are extremely rare.
